Google Pomelli Replaces a $2,000 Photo Shoot

Here's a number that should make every e-commerce seller and marketer pay attention: $0.

Here's a number that should make every e-commerce seller and marketer pay attention: $0.

That's what Google is charging for Pomelli Photoshoot, their new AI product photography tool. Upload one image. Get unlimited studio-quality variations.

No photographer. No studio rental. No two-week turnaround.

I've been testing it since it dropped yesterday. Here's what you need to know.

What Pomelli Photoshoot Actually Does

You upload a single product image. Even an iPhone photo works.

Pomelli strips out the background, understands the product, and generates new shots with different:

  • Backgrounds (studio, lifestyle, outdoor, custom)
  • Lighting setups
  • Angles and compositions
  • Seasonal themes (holiday, summer, etc.)

The output is production-ready. We're talking images you can drop straight into Amazon listings, Meta ads, or your Shopify store.

Why This Matters Right Now

Let me break down what product photography used to cost:

The old way:

  • Photographer: $300-800 per session
  • Studio rental: $100-300
  • Props and styling: $50-200
  • Editing and retouching: $50-150
  • Timeline: 1-3 weeks
  • Total: $500-1,500 for maybe 10-15 final images

The new way:

  • Upload one photo to Pomelli
  • Generate 10-20 variations in minutes
  • Download and use immediately
  • Total: $0

This isn't meant to replace high-end brand campaigns.

It fixes the 80% of product photography that doesn't need to be custom.

Think about it:

How many times have you needed a quick product shot for an ad test? A seasonal variation for a holiday campaign? A lifestyle mockup for a pitch deck?

That's where this tool destroys the old model.

How to Actually Use It (Step by Step)

Here's my exact workflow after a full day of testing:

Step 1: Prepare Your Source Image

The better your input, the better your output. But "better" doesn't mean professional.

What works:

  • Clean, well-lit product shot (natural light is fine)
  • Simple background (white, solid color, or easily separable)
  • Product fills most of the frame
  • Sharp focus on the product

What doesn't work as well:

  • Cluttered backgrounds with similar colors to the product
  • Blurry or low-resolution images
  • Extreme angles that hide product details

Step 2: Go to labs.google/pomelli

Available free in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Sign in with your Google account.

Step 3: Upload and Select Style

You'll get options for:

  • Studio shots - Clean, professional, white/gray backgrounds
  • Lifestyle - Product in context (kitchen counter, desk, outdoor)
  • Seasonal - Holiday themes, summer vibes, etc.
  • Custom - Describe what you want

Step 4: Generate and Iterate

Generate 5-10 variations. Pick your favorites. Regenerate if needed.

Tip: Don't try to get one perfect image. Generate many and pick the winners. The cost is the same either way (free), so volume is your friend.

Step 5: Download and Deploy

Images download at high resolution. Ready for:

  • E-commerce listings (Amazon, Shopify, Etsy)
  • Paid ads (Meta, Google, TikTok)
  • Social media content
  • Email campaigns
  • Pitch decks and presentations

Five Use Cases That Make This a No-Brainer

1. A/B Testing Ad Creative

Before: Pay for one hero shot, hope it works.

Now: Generate 10 variations, test them all, let the data decide.

The brands winning on Meta and Google right now are testing 10-20 ad creative variations per product. Pomelli makes that economically viable for small brands.

2. Seasonal Campaigns Without Reshooting

Got a product photo from your spring campaign? Generate holiday versions, summer versions, back-to-school versions. Same product, new context, zero additional cost.

3. Amazon Listing Optimization

Amazon's algorithm rewards listing updates. Fresh images can boost visibility. Now you can refresh your listing images monthly without touching your photography budget.

4. Mockups Before Real Shoots

Planning a major brand campaign? Use Pomelli to mock up concepts first. Show stakeholders options before committing to expensive production.

5. Social Content at Scale

Need 30 product images for a month of social posts? Generate them in an afternoon. Mix styles, backgrounds, and compositions to keep your feed fresh.

What It Can't Do (Yet)

Let's be honest about the limitations:

  • Complex lifestyle scenes - It's not replacing a full lifestyle shoot with models and elaborate sets
  • Brand-specific styling - If you have very specific brand guidelines, you'll need to iterate more
  • Multiple products in one shot - Single product focus works best
  • Packaging with text - Small text on packaging can get distorted

For hero campaign imagery and brand-defining content, you still want a real photographer. But for the other 80% of your product photography needs? This handles it.

The Bigger Picture

Here's what I keep thinking about:

Google didn't have to make this free. They could have charged $20/month, $50/month, whatever. Plenty of startups are charging that much for worse tools.

But they made it free.

That tells me something about where this is all going. Product photography is becoming a commodity. The value is shifting from "can you create the image" to "do you know which image to create."

Strategy over execution.

The brands that win won't be the ones with the biggest photography budgets. They'll be the ones who test more, iterate faster, and understand their customers better.

This tool is a lever. The question is: what will you build with it?

Key Takeaways

  • Pomelli Photoshoot is free for US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand users
  • One product image → unlimited variations in minutes, not weeks
  • Best for: Ad testing, seasonal campaigns, listing optimization, social content, mockups
  • Not for: Complex lifestyle shoots, brand campaigns, multi-product scenes
  • The biggest insight: Product photography is becoming a commodity; strategy is the new differentiator

Try It This Week

Here's my challenge for you:

Take your best-selling product. Upload one photo to Pomelli. Generate 10 variations.

Then run an A/B test with your current hero image vs. the best Pomelli output.

Let the data tell you if this is worth adding to your workflow.

My bet? You'll never look at product photography budgets the same way again.
